What to Expect in My Beginner Surf Lesson
The first thing to know is that surfing is not an easy discipline: each wave is different, the wave moves, the board moves, and catching and riding a wave for the first time requires strength, technique, and luck. But don't get discouraged; we are here to help you in this wonderful process of learning to surf.
The beginner surf course is generally structured into three parts:
- Theoretical introduction about surfing, safety, and basic technical concepts.
- Theory and practice on the sand where we practice what we've learned in theory.
- Practice in the water where the instructor accompanies and guides us at all times, helps us, gives us feedback after each wave, and expands our goals as we progress.
Goals of Beginner Surf Lessons with 9 Pies
At this level, the general goal is to slide on the foam in a straight line, master foot placement on the board, and balance your weight. For those with less skill, the goal will be to catch waves lying down, turn gently, brake, and accelerate. We will also focus on catching waves without the instructor's help, paddling independently, and controlling your board so that you are ready for the next level.
Introduction
After introductions, we'll explain the class process in detail and the session's objectives. We'll cover some basic concepts about the sea and waves and discuss the surf conditions for the session.
Familiarization with Surfing
We'll review surfing modalities, basic terms and concepts, behavior rules in the water, and priority rules. We'll also show you how a surfboard works, the fins, wax, and leash—basic and essential equipment we use every time we go into the water.
Safety Warnings
Safety is paramount, and we must remember that we are practicing an adventure sport, so from day one, we'll explain surf priorities and rules, currents, how to act in case of falls or "wipeouts," equipment control, and how to interact with other surfers, safety signals, etc.
Theory on Basic Surfing Skills
We'll discuss how to enter the sea, position yourself, paddle on the board, timing in surfing, and how to catch the first foam and waves lying down for those having their first lesson. We'll continue with standing up, the gliding position, and how to re-enter the sea, showing you how to do it on your board on the sand to facilitate later practice.
Practice in the Sea
Now it's time to put what we've learned into practice, bringing our enthusiasm and patience. The first days are the most fun; everything is new, and we quickly achieve goals. The instructors will help us at all times, guiding us on the waves, correcting mistakes, encouraging and motivating us. Whether you surf a wave lying down or standing up to the shore, the most important thing is that you'll have enjoyed it and will be looking forward to your next surf session.
Frequently asked questions about surf courses
How many course days are necessary to learn to surf?
It is a recurring question when hiring a surf course with 9 Pies. If you want to have the basic notions, one or two days of the course may be enough to get in touch with surfing. If you want a broader base, and develop what you have learned in the first few days, a course of 5 days or a week will be better for you. Above all, your body tones up after the first 2 or 3 sessions and gets used to the movements of surfing, the concepts are internalized and can be put into practice more easily. Now, learning to surf is a long-distance race and the progression is not usually fast.
What do I need to bring to my surf lesson?
You only need to bring a swimsuit, sun protection and a towel, that and a lot of desire is the only essential.
Is the material included in the price of the surf lesson?
The price includes insurance, the neoprene suit and the surfboard.
